28th November 2008

Dawlish Warren - Surf Scoter still on sea off wind turbine early afternoon. Also adult Mediterranean Gull, Whimbrel and 2 Red-throated Divers. Possible Siberian Chiffchaff in car park.

Plymouth - 4 Purple Sandpipers off West Hoe with 4 Mediterranean Gulls.

Sidmouth - 8 Purple Sandpipers on Chit Rocks.

Ilfracombe - Black Redstart in gardens by the museum at SS.517.477

Isley Marsh - 6 Spoonbills still, as well as 4 Pintail.

Fremington Pill - Spotted Redshank again in creek late morning with Greenshank.

Mudbank Lane - Spotted Redshank on edge of estuary in channel. Also Greenshank and 2 Pale-bellied Brent Geese (Thanks T. Smith)

Dawlish Warren - Surf Scoter still offshore. Also Black-throated Diver, Red-throated Diver, Great Northern Diver and 7 Common Scoters.

Preston - Long-tailed Duck still offshore with 4 Black-necked Grebes and a Great Northern Diver.

Goodrington - 5 Black-necked Grebes.

Tiverton - No sign of Long-eared Owl in private garden.

Bursdon Moor - 3 Hen Harriers (ringtails) and a Merlin late afternoon.

Broadsands - Probable Siberian Chiffchaff (ssp. tristis) on south side of Broadsands Marsh. Also 'Scandinavian' Chiffchaff (presumed ssp. abietinus).

Seaton - 3 Great Northern Divers past.

Berry Head - Sardinian Warbler still in scrub early morning but no sign by 1.20pm. Several Cirl Buntings and a Dartford Warbler also present.

Barred Warbler briefly present again in scrub at mid day but no further sign by late afternoon. 2 Black Redstarts in the area, as well as Blackcap, Dartford Warbler and 3 Cirl Buntings (Thanks J. Berry Head - Sardinian Warbler still present though mobile, ranging from car park by visitor centre to 50m along track beyond car park. Dartford Warbler also still present, as well as c10 Cirl Buntings. Long-eared Owl in scrub behind visitor centre.

Lundy - Rough-legged Buzzard (present for c1 week)

Bellever - Great Grey Shrike still at Bellever Forest. From the car park walk west along the road and through the farm to the forest cottage, continue walking up the hill and the bird favours the area of felled conifers on the crest of the hill, though mobile.

Broadsands - Red-necked Grebe off Elbury Cove. Also Black-necked Grebe, Great Northern Diver, Red-throated Diver and female Common Scoter.

14th November 2008

Broadsands - 2 Red-necked Grebe, 2 Red-throated Diver and 3 Velvet Scoter offshore. 3 Scaup flew towards Torquay.

Modbury - Common Crane again 2 miles west of Modbury in stubble field south of the A379 at c.SX.638.516. Take the minor road signed Orcheton and view from the 1st gate beyond Goutsford Bridge.

Dawlish Warren - Surf Scoter female again offshore with 3 Scaup viewable from Groyne 9. Also Mediterranean Gull and Pale-bellied Brent Goose in estuary.

Isley Marsh - 5 Spoonbills still.

Fremington Pill - Spotted Redshank

Bradiford Water - Spoonbill on the main river adjacent to the reserve mid-morning.

Northam Burrowes - Short-eared Owl late afternoon viewed from Sandymere Road.

Kenwith NR - Firecrest with tit flock by entrance to reserve.

Topsham - Probable Glossy Ibis on river Clyst viewed from Darts Farm RSPB shop though distant.

Modbury - No sign of Common Crane by mid-day.

Berry Head - No sign of Sardinian Warbler or Barred Warbler by late morning. Dartford Warbler and 2 Cirl Buntings present.

Appledore - King Eider still off lifeboat station. No sign of Desert Wheatear nearby at Instow.

Isley Marsh - 6 Spoonbills still late morning.

Berry Head - Sardinian Warbler in scrub just west of Northern Fort, showing well at times though mobile. (M. Langman) No sign by late afternoon. Black Redstart around fort. Barred Warbler briefly in scrub by meadow but flew inland and no further sign.

Instow - Desert Wheatear male on shoreline by oil pipeline jetty SS.475.322  (J. Turner) No sign by dusk.

Preston, Torquay - 2 Great Northern Diver close inshore.

Appledore - King Eider still off Churchfiels car park.

Bellever - Great Grey Shrike still at Bellever Forest. From the car park walk west along the road and through the farm to the forest cottage, continue walking up the hill and the bird favours the area of felled conifers on the crest of the hill, though mobile, and ocasionally moving towards Postbridge. Berry Head - Balearic Shearwater, Sooty Shearwater, 2 Pomarine Skua, 1 Arctic Skua, 6 Great Skua, 5 Great Northern Diver, Red-throated Diver 300 Kittiwakes, 7 Common Gulls and 3 Harbour Poirpoise (Thanks J Marshall and M Darlaston).

Instow - Unconfirmed report that the 2 Scaup here are a Lesser Scaup and a Greater Scaup.

Prawle Point - 2 Balearic Shearwater past; also 2 Manx Shearwater and 2 Great Northern Diver.

Modbury Common Crane still in fields south of A379, 2 miles west of the village late afternoon. Take minor road signed Orcheton and park at c.SX638516, to view fields on left. If the bird is not visible from the gate by the bridge, then walk 200m up hill and view down valley from gate on left. 16 Crossbills also present briefly in ash trees, then flew west. (Thanks R. Modbury - Common Crane showing well at 15.15 in fields by the A379, 2 miles west of Modbury.

Bellever - Great Grey Shrike at Bellever Forest. From the car park walk west along the road and through the farm to the forest cottage, continue walking to the left and the bird favours the hedge by the first field.

Dawlish Warren - Hawfinch over. Also 9 Crossbills and a Dartford Warbler.

Ernesettle - Spotted Redshank in Ernesettle Creek.

Ugborough - Ring Ouzel on Ugborough moor.

Seaton - Black-throated Diver past. Mediterranean Gull and Velvet Scoter also offshore.

Prawle Point - Yellow-browed Warbler in hedge opposite the car park this morning. Also Firecrest, 2 Black Redstart and a Ring Ouzel.

Wembury - Short-eared Owl flew west at 13.15.

Thurlestone - Juvenile Long-tailed Duck at Bantham, just north of Thurlestone.

Appledore - King Eider still off the lifeboat station viewable from Church Fields car park.

Northam Burrowes - 4 Short-eared Owls between Skern road and Sandymere road mid afternoon. 2 Snow Buntings stil showing well on path by the visitor centre at 10.30. Pale-bellied Brent Goose with 100 Dark-bellied Brents at The Skern.

1st November 2008

Dawlish Warren - Common Rosefinch on The Spit with Greenfinches at 09.10. Also Short-eared Owl, Snow Bunting, Slavonian Grebe and 14 Little Egrets.
